Simplifying Access: A User-Friendly App for NGO Course and Meeting Bookings

This project focuses on designing a booking app for an NGO based in Barcelona. The app simplifies the process of scheduling meetings and courses for the NGO’s users, aiming to provide a seamless experience for all.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Many users of the NGO come from foreign countries and often do not speak Spanish or Catalan, making it difficult for them to visit the NGO's physical location or communicate via email. This language barrier adds an extra layer of complexity to booking meetings and courses. An app that supports their native language—Arabic in most cases—would simplify the process and make the NGO's services more accessible.

GOALS

  • Create a more intuitive and accessible reservation process.

  • Ensure the design is accessible for diverse users, including those at risk of social exclusion.

  • Support multiple languages to cater to a broad audience.

DESIGN THINKING METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH & INSIGHTS

Through user interviews and surveys, I identified that users struggled with navigating the current booking system, especially those less familiar with digital tools. These insights helped guide the app’s design, ensuring it addressed their specific needs.

SOLUTION DESIGNS

The app's design focuses on clarity, simplicity, and inclusivity. From intuitive navigation to inclusive language, the entire experience is designed to accommodate a wide range of users, ensuring easy booking of meetings and courses.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Being a solo project, there was no support from developers, which limited the technical aspects of the app. As a result, it couldn't be developed or launched. The challenge was focusing purely on design solutions without considering technical limitations, which allowed me to fully explore user experience improvements.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS

  • Collaborate with Developers: Work closely with developers to ensure effective implementation of the design.

  • Conduct User Testing: Perform additional user testing to gather insights for design refinement.

  • Integrate Interactions: Add interactive elements to enhance user engagement.

  • Establish a Design System: Develop a design system to ensure consistency in future updates.

  • Update design to look more professional and to meet design system grid layout and security margins.

LESSONS LEARNED

  • Accessibility is key when designing for a diverse audience.

  • User research significantly impacts design choices.

  • Designing without development constraints can free creativity but also poses challenges in keeping the solution realistic.

CONCLUSION

This project taught me the importance of designing for inclusivity and simplicity. Although it remains a concept without development, the process provided valuable insights into creating user-centered solutions for NGOs and similar organizations.
